'A choreographic provocateur' (The Observer 2014)
I am a choreographer and performance-maker working across disciplines, primarily in dance, live art and contemporary theatre. I work as an independent artist and also as co-director of performance collective PanicLab. My work is often in conversation with gay and queer cultures and politics.
My work has been supported and commissioned by: Dance City, The Place, Homotopia, The Unity Theatre, The Albany, Cambridge Junction, Soho Theatre, MDI, Yorkshire Dance, GLYPT, Barbican Plymouth, Chisenhale Dance Space and Live Art Bistro. My work has toured extensively around the UK, as well as internationally.
I have worked with and drawn on movement practices and communities outside of dance including Mixed Martial Arts, Acrobatics, pro-wrestling and fitness. I have developed a rich practice, creating links with a wide range of organisations across the performing arts sector, and reaching a diverse audience
I am a Lecturer in Creative and Contextual studies at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. I was a Senior Lecturer in Dance at Leeds Beckett University. Prior to that I taught on the MA Movement Directing and Teaching and Ma Advanced Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
An important part of my practice is mentoring young artists. Most recently I was a mentor and a steering group member for Accelerate, Leeds Dance Partnership initiative for early career artists delivered by Yorkshire Dance and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.
As well as making my own work I have a practice supporting other artists as a dramaturg, movement director and rehearsal director. Artists I've worked with include: Rachel Young, Priya Mistry, Anton Lachky, Will Dickie and Milk Presents.
I have a PhD in queer dance practice. My Thesis was entitled "Fucking with Ballet: Performing Queer Negativity' from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where I also completed my Masters in Advanced Theatre Practice (Directing). I have a BFA in Theatre (Playwriting) from Concordia University, Montreal and I studied ballet at a professional level at The School of Alberta Ballet, Calgary.
